In my community all of our elections are run by the people I buy my groceries from, sit behind in church, and see at school functions. I trust my neighbors who sacrifice their time to ensure my vote and voice counts. And it’s really fun to be able to catch up with Jean when I’m dropping off my ballot!

When we were growing up, our parents made us do chores and help out around the house. My mom would say, no one likes to clean a toilet, but when we all do our part, many hands make light work. Looking back, I’m grateful that they taught us that sense of responsibility and to always do my fair share. It’s shaped who I am. As an adult, it’s why I vote in every election. I feel like voting is part of the deal when you live in a democracy. Voting is how I can show up and pull my weight.

My grandfather lived through the Great Depression and fought in WWII. When we were growing up, he taught us to be grateful for all that we had and to take care of it. I’m glad he wasn’t alive to see the insurrection at the Capitol. He would have hated the disrespect for our democracy that so many have died to defend. I know what he would tell me now “Democracy is not a spectator sport. Get to work, do your part.” So this year I’m not only voting, I’m volunteering as a poll worker in honor of my Pop.

I’m not someone who always votes. I guess I wasn’t too sure how much it mattered. But recently a guy running for Senate stopped by. He asked me about how things were going and he really listened. When he left I thought, I don’t even know if I agree with him on everything, but it feels good to have someone listen and actually care about how folks like us are getting along. It made me realize that voting is the power I have to make sure that what matters to us counts. I’m voting from now on.

I’m so over hearing that change can’t happen. That we’re stuck with the same old, same old no matter what we do. I’ve seen change in my own town when people actually put down their phones and do something. So yeah, it can happen. I don’t always have time to care about every single thing coming at me online. But when it really matters – like this year – I’m gonna put down my phone and cast a vote. After all, it couldn’t hurt.
